Winrock and its partners are implementing the 2016-2021 Sustainable Water Partnership (SWP) cooperative agreement which provides thought leadership, innovation, and action in global water security by integrating water security issues into USAID Mission programming through relevant, country Mission-specific initiatives. As part of this effort, SWP seeks to partner in countries with relevant companies which are also identifying and managing these risks (such as water scarcity, pollution and poor water governance) that pose water security hazards to their core business.
WHAT CAN COMPANIES DO TO IMPROVE WATER SECURITY?
Companies can improve their own operational water efficiency, foster good water management practices within their supply chain, and cooperate with others within the river basin where they operate for better water stewardship.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO PARTNERING WITH SWP?
Winrock provides in-country technical assistance under SWP, including stakeholder and data analysis, problem formulation, options analysis, and water security project design and implementation. This complements efforts by those companies which are investing in-country in improving their own water stewardship practices and seeking to increase outreach and impact. SWP sees the bigger picture and will help companies to identify and address the critical risks facing water quantity and quality (risks that could be impacting their operations and supply chain) through its use of analytical tools, planning skills, and innovative water security implementation.
WHAT ARE SWP’S PRIORITY COUNTRIES?
SWP works globally, wherever a partnership with a USAID Country or Regional Mission can be reached. Presently, the program is working on water security projects in Pakistan, Cambodia, and Kenya and Tanzania; other priority countries for public-private partnership activities include Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Malawi, Mozambique, Nepal, Nigeria, Peru, the Philippines, Uganda, Vietnam, and Zambia.
WHAT IS THE TARGET SIZE FOR A PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP ACTIVITY UNDER SWP?
Winrock will give partnering preference where the private sector partner has multi-year projects in line with SWP’s objectives of improving water security in the river basin.
